Keeping Residents Safe — Fire and Falls
Study the lesson here, then use the free narrated cards to check what you remember. This is exam preparation; follow your training and facility policies in practice.
Your lesson
- Read or listen to each explanation.
- Pause to recall the answer, then practise with the cards.
Fire response: RACE
- RACE is a fire-response reminder:
Sequence
- Rescue people in immediate danger if safe;
- activate the Alarm;
- Confine the fire by closing doors;
- Extinguish only if trained and safe, or Evacuate as directed.
Safety and context
- Follow the facility emergency plan and keep an escape route available.
Extinguishers: PASS
- PASS means
Sequence
- Pull the pin,
- Aim at the base of the fire,
- Squeeze the handle,
- and Sweep from side to side.
Safety and context
- Use an extinguisher only when trained, the alarm has been raised, the fire is small enough to tackle safely, and a clear escape route remains available.
Fall prevention / Restraint safeguards
Fall prevention
- What are the most important things a nurse aide does to prevent falls?
- Follow the resident's fall-prevention and mobility plan. Keep the call device accessible, remove obstacles, use appropriate footwear, and leave the bed in its planned safe position. Secure wheelchair or bed brakes for transfers as instructed, and obtain the prescribed help or equipment.
Restraint safeguards
- What rules must be followed before using a restraint on a resident?
- Restraints must not be used for discipline or convenience. Follow applicable authorization requirements and the individualized plan; use the least restrictive permitted approach for the least time, with monitoring, care, release and reassessment as required. There is no universal two-hour rule that makes every restraint safe or lawful.
Choking response
Effective coughing
- If an adult can cough effectively, encourage coughing and monitor.
Severe responsive choking
- For severe choking in a responsive adult, activate emergency help and alternate 5 back blows with 5 abdominal thrusts under current AHA guidance and your training.
Pregnancy or body-size exception
- In late pregnancy or when you cannot encircle the abdomen, use 5 back blows followed by 5 chest thrusts instead.
Unresponsive person
- If the person becomes unresponsive, begin CPR starting with chest compressions and follow emergency-response instructions; remove only a visible object, never perform a blind finger sweep.
Bedside safety
Bedside safety
- What should be checked after routine bedside care?
- Leave the call device within reach and the bed in the safe position required by the care plan.
Pause and recall
